Texas teacher shocks parents by getting rid of homework for the whole year

Every student will want to transfer to Mrs Young's class after they see this.

"No homework" is the unicorn we can only dream of while studying in Singapore. However, one teacher from Texas decided to make the bold move, and it was welcomed by the youths and parents alike.

According to Distractify, her note to parents went viral on Facebook after Samantha Gallagher shared it.

The note read:

"After much research this summer, I am trying something new. Homework will only consist of work that your student did not finish during the school day. There will be no formally assigned homework this year."

"Research has been unable to prove that homework improves students performances. Rather, I ask that you spend your evenings doing things that are proven to correlate with student success. Eat dinner as a family, read together, play outside, and get your child to bed early."

"Thanks, Mrs. Brandy Young."

Reactions from parents have been overwhelmingly positive, and the post has received over 57,000 shares.

A group of Australian researchers recently concluded that homework doesn't help kids do better in school and could even lower their test scores. Richard Walker, an educational psychologist at Sydney University, found that in countries that give more homework to students, kids score lower on an internationally standardised test.

Gerald LeTendre of Pennsylvania State University arranged a study that confirmed these findings.

He said that assigning homework "appeared to be a remedial strategy (a consequence of not covering topics in class, exercises for students struggling, a way to supplement poor quality educational settings), and not an advancement strategy (work designed to accelerate, improve or get students to excel.)"
