More than 6,000 National University of Singapore (NUS) students took to the streets yesterday, as part of the institution's annual efforts to raise funds for charity.

It is hoped that this year's Flag Day, organised by the NUS Students' Union (Nussu), will raise at least $470,000 for 23 beneficiaries.

Last year's edition raised more than $459,000.

Earlier this week, NUS president Tan Chorh Chuan encouraged the university community and the public to strongly support Nussu's fund-raising efforts.

This followed the announcement that all student-organised freshman activities would be suspended after reports of inappropriate behaviour at orientation camps emerged.
