Can men and women have a strictly platonic friendship?

'Men and women can NEVER be "just friends",' how many times have you heard this line?

Has your significant other flown off the handle for having a 'close friend' of the opposite sex, claiming that he or she likes you even though you vehemently deny it?

Have you had friends raising eyebrows at your 'best friend'? Or has that 'best friend' once confessed his feelings for you -- but you went back to being 'just friends'?

Some think it is possible to have a strictly platonic friendship with a member of the opposite sex, while others feel that feelings are bound to be involved when two parties are close to each other.

What is your take on this? Can men and women have a strictly platonic friendship? Why or why not? Share with us your views on this or personal experiences, if any.
