Red — Chilli
Celeste Lim Hui Lin, 13, Sec 1, Fairfield Methodist Secondary
Red — the colour of all things hot.
A volcano spewing out lava,
the sun, a burning ball,
a house on fire,
or simply just a harmless-looking chilli.

A smooth innocent appearance at a glance.
But on the inside,
a surprise awaits you.
Take a bite,
and you’ll feel the heat within.

Hard to believe, isn’t it?
But every tiny little chilli seed is the culprit
for that burning tongue.

Each seed represents something.

The first,
Anger — not just any kind of anger.
But bottled-up anger.
On the outside,
as calm as the seas.
Yet on the inside,
scheming, plotting revenge.

The next,
A campfire — the source
of light and warmth in a forest.
Strong, bright and vital.
But once you run out of firewood,
you are left with nothing
but chills down your spine.

Another,
A cup of coffee — that has just
been brewed.
Appearing to be at a
drinkable temperature.
Take a sip and give your tongue
a sizzle.
For with it burnt,
that would have been
the last thing you have tasted.

Each resembling a chilli.
Using looks to deceive.
Remember,
All you see
is not all there is.

Just one chilli,
and a lesson well learnt:
Never judge a book by its cover.
