Man arrested 5 days after allegedly setting off unlawful fireworks in Yishun

A 40-year-old man was arrested for his suspected involvement in a case of unlawful discharge of dangerous fireworks.

The police had responded to the incident at Block 642 Yishun Street 61 on April 9 at 10.42pm.

It was the last day of Ramadan.

Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police cameras and closed-circuit television, officers from Woodlands Police Division established the identity of the man and arrested him on April 14.

The man was to be charged in court on April 16.

The Government started regulating the use of fireworks in 1968 when the practice of lighting celebratory fireworks became a serious public safety issue. Certain types of fireworks were banned, but fires were still caused.

A total ban was rolled out on Aug 1, 1972.

The offence is punishable by an imprisonment term of up to two years or with a fine of not less than $2,000 and not more than $10,000, or both.
