How much money Olympic medal-winning athletes from other countries get is measly compared to what Singapore athletes get.
Acidcow compiled a list of how much the medallists are paid around the world.
Joseph Schooling, who brought home Singapore's first Olympic gold medal for his success at the men's 100-metre butterfly, was awarded a S$1 million prize.
Schooling will get to keep $650,000 of his prize money, after income tax and a 20 per cent contribution to the National Sports Association are deducted.
That's more money than Michael Phelps gets for all his medals combined. Phelps gets about $25,000 USD from the United States for his Olympic victories. The swimming legend has a total of 23 gold medals.
