An insight into celebrity VJ Utt's life
Story by Ong Wei Zhong, Punggol Secondary School

For some, it was the time of their lives.

The Straits Times Media Club members got the rare opportunity to interview MTV video jockey, Utt, who is also the host of Mediacorp Channel 5’s "Incredible Tales", during the media club camp held from 12 to 14 June 2007 at the SPH Auditorium in Toa Payoh North.

Even before the star entered the room, almost every single one had left their seats to await Utt’s arrival in great anticipation. The moment he arrived, camera flashes went off repeatedly. One highly enthusiastic even took everyone by surprise and went to the extreme of plucking a few strands of hair from Utt's head. Several others also hugged him when they received MTV notebookes from him.

Utt said that while he did feel afraid when he hosted the "Incredible Tales" series, there were certain points when he felt uncomfortable such as when filming at the cemetery late at night. He said he sometimes felt something unusal in the air, but did not see anything with his own two eyes. Utt also said that entertainment has grown to become a norm for him. He loves established artistes with rich acting experience. On another note, Utt said he especially liked Singaporeans as he thinks that they are fluent in English, which makes for easy conversation.

The name Utt actually means the blue sky. His name may suggest that he likes the environment but this is not true. He felt that Singapore is a fast- paced country and going back to the environment sounded slow- paced for him.

Utt is currently pursuing a business course, an area which he has strong interest in. He feels that business is the basic to everything and therefore learning the ropes of business is a must.

As a VJ, Utt has interviewed two very prominent people, which includes David Beckham and Bill Gates. Upon mentioning these two names, the whole room burst into loud cheer, envying him for his rare chance to meet up with these two. Given his busy schedule, how does he unwind? Well, he would take the opportunity whenever he has leave. For example, after five days of hardwork, he would set himself one day free. He would sometimes tag along with his friends to Sentosa to play Frisbee. Another way he destresses is to simply catch up with some much-needed sleep.

Catch him in action on Channel 5’s "Incredible Tales" which airs every Thursday at 10pm, as he plays host.
