At least two explosions were heard and felt by nearby residents at about 2:15pm today (Oct 6) at 16, Sungei Kadut Way, between Yew Tee and Kranji MRT stations. Fire broke out at a factory that dealt with UV-coating and parquet flooring materials.
The building was in flames, with thick black smoke billowing from the windows and roof.
"This is not the first time that there has been a fire in the factories in the area. There was also a fire two to three months back, but this one today is the biggest so far," said Chew Kia Ewe, 72, who lives near the factory.
"One train that was travelling from Yew Tee to Kranji stopped for about one to two minutes before moving off again," said 28-year old Jeremy Oh who had driven to the scene for a closer look.
The MRT track, less than 50 metres away, is unaffected by the fire, according to the SCDF spokesperson.
STOMP checked with SMRT and found that the Train Officers had been instructed to reduce the speed of the trains near the incident site due to visibility concerns. SMRT had also stationed personnel at the site to monitor the situation.
SCDF fire engines arrived on the scene in five minutes and the fire was extinguished in 30 minutes. No casualties were reported by the SCDF.
The cause of the explosions is still under investigation. SCDF has ruled out foul play.
In the space of an hour after the incident, STOMP received more than 30 videos, pictures and tip-offs from various STOMPers via SMS, MMS and email. |
